Green River - Desolation and Gray Canyons
Day Two
A 10 mile day
Groover site- “Open Contemplation”. We were able to parallel park the rafts. Great camp with a big beach and "apartment" style tent sites up in the Tamarisk.
Breakfast-ran out of eggs for the French toast (have to remember for the next big trip) Also ran out of bacon and veggie sausage. A bunch of hungry campers!!
Lunch, the usual fare
Dinner, Tortellini with shrimp and brownies for desert. Good dinner!
I plan on ducking one half day, and lounging on the raft the other half day, each day, that way I don’t have to bug Rob about letting me row. First day flat water, so not much going on. Campfire on the beach, everyone's pretty pooped.
"Telepathy" Games - "Guess the Square" and "Anazasi Numbers"
Wildlife
Swarms of catfish in the river, you could hear them everywhere as well as see them poking their heads out of the water and sucking the flies off the surface of the river. Theories bounce around the group as to the explanation of this localized mass extinction of flies. My favorite is that wind shear caused a swarm of flies to fall in the river. Beaver and Wild horses the next morning. I remember hearing the wild horses well before seeing thm across the river, and then recognizing the sound, and searching until we spotted the horses. All morning before we launched we would look for them, or hear them, I think they were as interested in us as we were in them!
We were hoping to see a the meteor shower but cloudy night prevented that. Oh well, good times and sleepy campers.
