Green River - Desolation and Gray Canyons
Day Six
Layover at Wire Fence Camp
The canyon is in shadow all morning, then like pulling a drape it opens on me. I begin to feel the warmth in my arms, while my toes are still cool in the sand. There is kitchen noise, dishes, chatter, proselytizing, and always the constant rumble of the white water. Lowell sits beside me, enjoying the wakening of the beach, is questioned by Bob, approached by Renee, and finally left alone to enjoy a moment of solitude in the middle of activity.
Waxing Poetic
People who were complete strangers 6 days ago have found they are now a unit. What a diverse group who have left behind their lives for an adventure to find the adventure plus friendship.
When we plan a river trip we often think of where we will go, what we will eat, and what kind of rapids there will be. The surprises are the people who travel with you. Often their daily lives take much different paths than yours, but on the river when the tribe is created, you see them for who they truly are.
The sun has filled the beach from both directions, Bill is getting Lowell out of the sun, and the music is playing. Our layover day before us, what will we do?
Notes scratched into my journal by my fellow travelers.
Val: Camped at a spectacular Canyon. A haunt of buttes and escarpments at “Flat Wire”. Red and redder Unitah formations giving way to what Powell described as “the country opens up for a mile or so before entering a canyon of assorted gray rock..tommorows journey!

Sam:the man -or- the kid with the crazzzy dad
Jake: the snake -or- the dad with a crazzzy kid.
Roger: I'm usually man of few words, let me say a few words; thanks for allowing me to be a part of Rob & Tina’s most excellent most great adventure. PS Being point man is a lot of fun and I hope I have served you well!
Most go off on a hike while a few us prefer to simply hang out. Special dinner tonight –hand rubbed Porterhouse Steaks, portabella mushrooms, baked potatoes, a 2 Dutch Oven iced anniversary layer cake, topping it all off with a champagne toast for Bill and Rene’s anniversary. All this on day six! Hat's off to the Bob2 clan for their cooler diligence.
